On August 26, Mondo Duplantis of Sweden won the gold medal in the men’s pole vault competition at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Duplantis cleared 6.10 meters on his first attempt, which was sufficient for the gold medal win. He also cleared his previous heights (6.05 meters, 6.00 meters, 5.95 meters, 5.85 meters, and 5.55 meters) all of his first try as well.

Duplantis also took three attempts for a new world record in the men’s pole vault (6.23 meters) with no further success; however, his 6.10 meter clearance was more than enough to secure him the gold medal in Budapest.

Ernest John (EJ) Obiena of the Philippines finished in second place with a new personal best and a new Asian record of six meters, which he cleared on his second attempt.

American athlete Chris Nilsen and Australian pole vaulter Kurtis Marschall both tied for third place with 5.95 meters, which was a season best and a personal best respectively.

Ironically enough, in the women’s pole vault competition, American Katie Moon and Australian Nina Kennedy tied for the gold medal with 4.90 meters, so it was neat to see an America/Australia tie in the podium once again for the men.

As a result, Duplantis won his second consecutive outdoor world championship. Last year, Duplantis won the gold medal at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, setting a world record at the time with 6.21 meters.
